The Michigan Recruiting Connection is the brainchild of Rob Hoffman, an award-winning journalist with nearly 20 years of professional writing experience –
including an eight-year stint at the Ann Arbor News, where he served as the newspaper’s primary preps reporter and columnist from 2002-2007.
After he left the News, several things he had learned covering high school sports haunted Hoffman. Some coaches had told him how overwhelming it was to promote all their seniors to colleges. Many parents complained they felt overmatched when it came to playing the recruiting game.
But he also heard positive stories. Like the basketball player from a tiny Ypsilanti school who landed a Division 1 scholarship after Hoffman wrote an article about her in 2003. Or the third-best runner on the Pinckney cross-country team – and the 14th best in his tiny region – whose relentless self-promotion had four different colleges offering him scholarship money and financial aid.
He knew those wouldn’t have to be the only success stories. And he could do something about that.
Armed with previous experience in the electronic media, Hoffman added web-programming skills to his burgeoning résumé and launched the Michigan Recruiting Connection in 2008. The idea was to relieve the pressure on parents and prep coaches through the production of individualized highlight DVDs, press kits and web pages that would put them in front of college coaches like never before.
